Our Wines

Surrounded by mountains and tucked into the hills of the Helderberg on a north facing slope, the terroir of Rust en Vrede is ideally suited to full bodied reds. We only want to produce the highest quality possible, which is why our focus is solely on Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah 2020

Our Estate Vineyard Syrah is a typical expression of Stellenbosch, and owner Jean Engelbrecht’s favourite variety. Chosen in 2016 as one of Wine Spectator’s top 100 wines in the world.

Vineyard

Grapes for this wine come from 7 hectares of vineyard planted on the Rust en Vrede Estate.

Ageing

18 months in 100% 500L French oak barrels, using 20% new oak.

Tasting Notes

Rich black fruit with a floral perfume of musk. Blackberry compote, blueberries and ripe damson plum combine with spicy paprika, sweet red pepper and sandalwood. Round, juicy black fruit follows on the palate, with intense black cherry, crème de cassis and chilli chocolate. Layers of complex flavours are revealed as the wine opens. Refined tannins are well integrated with the intense fruit, balanced by zesty acidity. Full bodied and structured with a long finish of blueberry and black pepper. Date tasted: 1 July 2022.

Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Our Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is our longest standing tradition here at Rust en Vrede. The variety that Stellenbosch is most well-known for, Rust en Vrede Cabernet Sauvignon offers a concentrated and classic rendition of the variety.

Grapes for this wine come from 22 hectares of vineyard planted on the Rust en Vrede Estate.

Ageing

18 months in 100% French oak barrels, using 20% new oak.

Tasting Notes

Expressive black fruit jumps out of the glass. Juicy black cherry and cassis combine with blueberries, liquorice and sandalwood. Full bodied and intense on the palate. Fine grained, grippy tannins balance well with a fresh, black-fruit acidity. Tobacco, nutmeg and savoury spice bring complex layers to mulberry and bramble fruit that round out the palate. A typically well-structured Cabernet with excellent length. Date tasted: 1 June 2022

Rust en Vrede Estate 2019

The Estate blend is the emblematic wine of Rust en Vrede. The blend is made up of the proportions of varieties planted on Rust en Vrede, making it the most honest reflection of our terroir. Selected four times by Wine Spectator as one of the top 100 wines in the World.

Vineyard

Named to reflect the planting on the property, the grapes for this wine come from 22 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, 7 hectares of Syrah and 1 hectare of Merlot

Ageing

22 months in 100% French oak barrels, using 40% new oak.

Tasting Notes

Distinctive aromas of crème de cassis, Black Forest gateaux and sandalwood give way to subtle vanilla and nutmeg spice. Chalky, fine grained tannins reveal the structure of the blend and provide a rounded mouth feel. Flavours of black cherry and toast are balanced by well-integrated acidity. Restrained on the palate, showing some potential for aging, with a soft, savoury finish.

Rust en Vrede Single Vineyard Syrah 2018

The Single Vineyard Syrah was conceptualized by Jean Engelbrecht as his generational contribution to the family legacy. A pure expression of only the best Syrah that Rust en Vrede has to offer.

Grapes are harvested from our oldest and best block of Syrah on the property.

Ageing

Malolactic Fermentation in Barrel. 16 months in 100% French oak with 50% new and 50% 2nd fill, in 500l barrels medium toast barrels.

Tasting Notes

Expressive red and black fruit combine seamlessly on the nose. Spicy red cherries, mulberry and blueberries. Dark chocolate and smoked paprika add layers. Elegant and accessible on the palate, with fine, ripe, and velvety tannins. Red-fruit acidity balances the bold black fruit flavours, with toasty oak, tobacco and a hint of cured meat adding complexity to the wine.

Rust en Vrede Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

The Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was a natural addition to the range following the success of the Single Vineyard Syrah. A pure expression of only the best Cabernet Sauvignon that Rust en Vrede has to offer.

Ageing

Malolactic Fermentation in Barrel. 22 months in 100% French oak with 50% new 300L medium toast barrels.

Tasting Notes

A prominent bouquet of cedar, pencil shavings and dark chocolate rounded out with cassis and black cherry. A full-bodied, classic Cabernet in a Bordeaux style, this wine shows fine-grained tannins and velvety acidity. Blackberries and mulberries complement savoury spice – coriander seed and juniper. Structured and powerful, this is a Cabernet that will continue developing complexity as it ages.

Rust en Vrede 1694 Classification 2018

Grape Varieties: 61% Syrah, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon

Named to commemorate the date that Rust en Vrede was established, this is a slightly unusual blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, with an emphasis on the opulence of Rust en Vrede Syrah. An exemplary combination of our two focus varieties.

Vineyard

Grapes are selected from the two single vineyard parcels of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, the oldest and best vines on the Estate.

Ageing

Malolactic Fermentation in Barrel. 22 months in 100% French oak with 50% new 300L barrels.

Tasting Notes

Intense blackcurrant with lead pencil blanketed in a soft perfume of violets. On the palate, well defined fruit flavours of cassis, red currant, and bramble dominate underscored with sandalwood and liquorice. Spicy notes of freshly ground black pepper with cinnamon and clove bring depth. Structured with robust tannins and a textured finish of blackcurrant with nutmeg. Opulence meets restraint.
